the adventure begins…

A couple of years ago my parents moved in with us to help take care of our daughters as my husband and I juggled two stressful careers.  My dad likes simple food and struggles with some of my more adventurous meals.  This year, at Father’s day I made him his favorite dinner of hamburgers and pork and beans.  That’s when inspiration hit – could I take the beloved burger and make it the vehicle for introducing my dad to new flavors?  Indeed, looks like I can!

So, here’s the goal…create one burger recipe for every country in the world.

Here’s the recipe for success on this adventure:

  • countries are defined by member states of the UN, that’s 192  193 countries as of today (yes, if any new countries are recognized by the UN before we get to Zimbabwe, they too will get burgers)
  • recipes are inspired by the popular foods of each country, I’m not claiming authenticity, just hoping to bring the flavors of the country to life in delicious burgers
  • I get all ingredients at my local grocery stores (no shopping in ethnic markets or gourmet stores)
  • burger = starchy base with ground or shredded meat patty on top (top “bun” is optional)

So that’s it, simple and (hopefully) yummy.  As we go along this journey, I’ll also share with you any cultural and/or historical tidbits that I come across, but mainly we’ll talk about food.  Please chime in if I get something wrong, if you have ideas for improvements to the recipes or the site, or stories to share about your own food experiences.

Let the games begin…

Awesome Shel!, I’m proud of what you are doing, keep it up 🙂 I do have a question though, can this be used for any recipe questions or comments or are you strictly burgers?

thanks sis! at this point, i’m focusing on burgers for my blog, but folks can ask me anything. i’d also welcome anyone who had experiences with the “real” food from the country we’re talking about. if you ask me something and i don’t know, i’ll try to find it out – i’ve got a million cookbooks, an extremely talented brother in law who could be a chef if he wanted to be, and i’m getting really good at separating the crap from the good stuff in my internet searches. i hope you’ll try some of the recipes – just tell zach it’s chicken (there will be chicken burgers too..stay tuned)

Looks like a great start! Sadly, Mary and I have been eating vegetarian for the past year or more, so we probably won’t be trying any of these soon. Hopefully you’ll get around to a veggie burger, maybe for India.

Good job on setting up WordPress. Are they hosting it, or did you set it up on your own server? To make the recipes stand our from the rest of the blog, you could use a bulleted list, indented list/blockquote or italics. These are all pretty easy in the WordPress post editor. Getting fancier than that would probably require installing a plug in (if you have your own site) or using the code tab on the editor. There are a number of recipe related plug ins for WordPress.

    Happy blogging!

Thanks Ed – the toppings from the Afghan burger would be great on veggie burgers – try the ketchup, paul says i could bottle it. i’m hosting the site through hostgator, not wordpress. i’ll try your formatting advice on the next recipe (recipe plug ins sound interesting) – i’m getting better at figuring out wordpress, they aren’t as friendly/easy to use if you don’t host with them. i welcome all tech advice as i am a big time novice.

Hi Linda, love your recipes. Have you been following the situation in Southern Sudan? The people there recently voted in a referendum for independence, so will become the Republic of South Sudan in July. Hillary C says the US will recognise the new state. Not sure about the UN.

    • linda says:

Thanks, I’m glad you’re enjoying the recipes. I’ve been following all of the turmoil in the world lately – I’ve gotta say, this project has me more aware of the international landscape than ever before. If the UN recognizes them, then my burger count goes up to 193 – kind of messes up my Twitter ID, but that’s small potatoes in the vast scheme of things 🙂

This is an amazing idea. I’ve been trying to broaden my palette, and you’re right-burgers are a great medium for it. I hope you keep this blog up going, because I’m going to be following it.
